Stop cancer, before it starts. A smear test could save your life. Don't ignore your invitation. Cervical screening is also known as the 'smear test'. The test checks the cells from your cervix (the neck of the womb). It's designed to pick up any changes to the cell in your cervix so that they can be monitored or treated. Without treatment the changes can sometimes develop into cervical cancer.
All women in Scotland aged 25 to 49 are offered a smear test every 3 years. Women aged 50 to 64 are invited every 5 years. Women under the age of 25 who have already been invited for screening may be invited again before they reach 25. Some women are also offered screening more frequently, up to the age of 70 years.
